Walter Wither's Grave at St Helena Cemetery also known as St Katherine's Anglican Church Cemetery, Anthony Beale Reserve, 279 St. Helena Road, St. Helena, Victoria.

The Beale family lived on the property named St. Helena, with Anthony Beale's wife, Katherine Rose, dying on 5 August 1856. To her memory Anthony erected in his front garden, this beautiful place of worship which he named “The Rose Chapel”. For some two years after her death he used the chapel for long periods of meditation and prayer, much of which he recorded in his diary, now in the State Library of Victoria. After his death on 4 September 1865 the chapel was willed, with three acres of land to the Church of England. It was consecrated St. Katherine’s in 1876 by Bishop Thornton of Ballarat.

Wattles come in all shapes and sizes from prostrate varieties through to small to medium shrubs and up to tall trees

 Australia's national colors, referencing the wattle, are green and gold, popularly considered so since the 1800s and formally proclaimed and made official in 1984.

Wattle species are ideally suited to Australia's harsh environment being able to withstand droughts, winds, and bushfires. This resilience is thought to represent the spirit of the Australian people.

 The Golden Wattle is considered to be a symbol of unity bringing all Australians together.

 Most of Australia's fertile regions are dominated by the Eucalyptus species and their cousins, but from late Winter to Summer the countryside is blessed with the Wattle's bursts of yellow and gold.

One kind word can warm three winter months means that well-chosen words of sympathy or encouragement can help a person overcome difficulties or obstacles, even those causing substantial problems.

It might be true ... but where does it come from?

Is It Really A japanese Proverb?

It is popularly known in the English-speaking world as a Japanese proverb. But is it really a Japanese saying? 

Actually, "One kind word can warm three winter months" is not a Japanese saying at all, there is no saying like it in Japanese, and no Japanese person would have heard of it or anything similar to it in Japanese. 

Instead, it is based on a Chinese saying. 

The actual Chinese saying is:

 

好言一句三冬暖，恶语伤人六月寒

iáng yán yijù sandong nuan, èyu shangrén liùyuè hán 

which can be translated as: 

"A kind word warms for three winter months, while vile talk wounds like bitter cold in June."

This sounds more rhythmic and symmetrical in the Chinese which reads more like:

kind words - winter - warm -- harsh words - summer - cold

The Origins

The Chinese saying comes from the compilation text  增廣賢文 (Zengguan xianwen) which can be translated generally as "Enlarged Writings of Worthies" being an expanded version of earlier texts such as 昔時賢文 (Xishi xianwen) or "Writings of worthies from ancient times". 

There were a number of different versions of this text which was designed to be used as part of primary or elementary education to instill a solid moral grounding for those Chinese children who had access to education. 

This was done by including aphorisms, proverbs, popular sayings and famous quotations, mostly focusing on daily life, social relationships, and patterns of decent behaviour.

It was written in symmetrical, rhymed pairs of sentences to be easier for children (and adults) to grasp and remember, which indicates the poetic nature of the original Chinese saying. 

After many hundred years of use it became particularly popular in the late Qing period in the 1800s. 

Extended Meaning

The meaning of "A kind word warms for three winter months, while vile talk wounds like bitter cold in June" extends beyond words themselves to focus on attitudes from which words emerge. 

At its most basic it means that a good word can make people warm like a fire in the cold winter, while a bad word can hurt people and make them cold like snowing in summer. 

Beyond this the saying also calls for a positive and good-hearted attitude which is geared towards giving positive hints or encouragement so that others can get the power to overcome difficulties and keep making progress. 

Along with this, it also points to how a negative mentality and attitude, and the words which can emerge from this, can make others suffer from this negativity and become unmotivated and discouraged, retreat, and languish. 

English equivalents

Some biblical equivalents include the focus on the positive possibilities of words by Solomon in Proverbs 25:11 - "A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in settings of silver". 

This sentiment is continued in Proverbs 15:23 - "A man takes joy in a fitting reply, and how good is a timely word!"

A focus on attitude as a prelude to words can be seen in Luke 6:45 - "A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of."

Cash Butchers became very popular from around the early 20th Century with a focus on delivering fresh cuts of meat at the most competitive price possible. As the name implies, the main feature of cash butchers (although not the only one) was the claim that they did not buy on credit and they did not sell on credit. This meant there was no costs associated with borrowing and lending in the credit process, such as chasing up debts, along with no losses from unpaid debts, resulting in lower prices.

A second aspect of the cash butcher was the concept of shortening the supply chain so that a hawker would no longer be buying cuts of meat and on-selling them.

A third aspect of the cash butcher was that the transaction would take place in a shop rather than as part of a delivery round, although deliveries still continued especially in country areas where it might not have been convenient for consumers to access a shop.

This primary focus of the cash butcher can be seen in the following advertisement from 1904, which also indicates how it was assumed that dealing in cash led to lower prices.

The advertisement for Kidman Bros. cash butchers is an Australian example of the extremes of this approach as to a certain extent Kidman Bros. controlled the entire supply chain, raising and fattening the cattle, butchering the cattle, and then retailing the cuts of meat.

Most cash butchers did not control the cattle farming or actual butchering (except in country areas, where Kidman Bros. was located (Broken Hill)), but it was essential that they were skilled butchers so they would not have to pay for that part of the process as well.

1/ The centipede performs an extremely complex action by coordinating all its legs in the action of movement.

2/ The centipede does not know how it coordinates all its legs, it does not think about it while doing it, but performs the task through habit.

3/ When called upon to think about and discuss how it performs the task, the centipede realises it does not know, becomes confused, and can no longer perform the task.

Habit diminishes and then eliminates the attention required for routine tasks, but this is automatically disrupted by attention to a normally unconscious competence.

In other words:

1/ You have learned through habit to perform what might be a somewhat difficult task without thinking about it. 

2/ You are then called upon to consider and think about how you perform the task. 

3/ By thinking about how you perform the task you can no longer perform it out of habit and you are then unable to perform it.

On the conscious competence learning steps model the performance of a task out of habit is one done with unconscious competence. 

The problem is that an explanation or understanding of the skills or mechanism for performing the task has been forgotten so that when someone is called upon to think about or explain how the task is performed they cannot do so and are then unable to perform the task through habit, being thrust into a state of conscious incompetence.
